Those that require assistance in their daily lives would be lost without the help that the support dogs provide. Dogs that are the trained to aid the blind are probably the ones that draw the most attention. This task has been known to be the primary role of most assistance dogs, but is now not necessarily the case. Today, however, dogs are used to help the hearing impaired, bedridden patients and a variety of disabled people. These dogs must be selected carefully, and some breeds are more appropriate than others. German Shepherds and Golden Retrievers are well suited to be assistance dogs, though some other breeds are also used. A dog that accompanies a blind or deaf person must be extremely well trained and obedient. In many cases, a disabled person’s very life may depend on a guide dog. It is critical that the assistance dog and the impaired person are well suited for each other.
Farmers and herders have used dogs ever since the olden days and their ways have continued even into the present time. Border Collies, German and Australian Shepherds are examples of the many different breeds of dogs that are used for herding cattle and livestock. These breeds, plus more, have an inherent instinct for herding and this can be really valuable for farm and ranch owners who have a lot of animals. Geese management is another thing these kinds of dogs can be used for, though not many people are familiar with it. Geese can be really annoying, especially at public places like the airport, golf courses or the race tracks. Chasing geese away and discouraging them from entering these kinds of places is something that some herding dogs are expressly trained for.
Most people will teach the dog how to do a few tricks, opposed to teaching them how to rescue someone or find a missing person. These tricks are not your average tricks, however. This is not about learning how to fetch or sit, but doing things that are very difficult to accomplish. To train your dog, clicker training is one way to go.
